When Hubs and #1 was in Aussieland for the 2008 WYD, #2 turned 16 and we quietly and un-eventfully had an Italian lunch of Salmon Ravioli, Fettuccine with white sauce and Tiramisu.
She had wanted to celebrate her birthday before Hubs left for Aussieland but we were too busy and brushed off her request. She was quite disappointed and was feeling a little forlorn.
Actually, Hubs and I had already discussed and planned a surprise birthday party for her the weekend after he got back. So yesterday, after all the planning, 'hiding', 'stringing stories', secret phone calls, secret conversations with her friends etc, etc, we finally had the big surprise!
Boy! Was she surprised! She didn't even have an inkling of what we were up to. I had to bake the cakes and transport it to a friend's house for #1 to do the icing just so that #2 wouldn't suspect anything.
This was the result of the Birthday Cake made by #1.
What do you think? Nice right?

Fabulous!! Wishing No. 2 a Happy Sweet 16!
#1 is truly talented! just like her mother!
Happy birthday #2. You are a July baby like me too!
Love this cake. It's very special. #1 sure has your genes.
PS: Read your reply to my question. Thanks for the tips.
very nice! Happy birthday No.2. You taught your daugther well in getting this organized. I just start reading your blog and just love 'em.
May I ask some questions:
- where do you normally get your supply of the Japanese incredient? I ask because I am now starting to pay attention to quality of incredient used
- in one of the posts, you said No.1 construct the cupcakes stand herself. Could I know how it was done? My son 2-year birthday coming up and would like to have one, which is inexpensive.
thanks
Liz
wow... just take a look at those icing !!! #1 definitely has your talent !!!
Beautiful! :) Wanna bake me a cake for my b-day on Tues? ;) hehe :) I especially love the last picture :)
How wonderful! Happy Birthday to #2 and great job #1 :)
emily: #2 had a wonderful birthday celebration! Unfortunately, I am the baker only, creative icing is not my forte. #1 did all the decor by herself! In fact she's preparing for the college exams this weekend and she was still willing to ice the cakes. Good kid!
jo-n: Thank you for the Birthday greetings and kind words!
elizabeth wong: Welcome! To answer your questions, I normally buy all my Japanese ingredients from Jusco @1U or Mega Mall. The supermarket at Isetan-KLCC is also well stocked with lots of good Japanese stuff too. Unfortunately the prices only keep going up and not the other way around!
#1 simply bought different sized cake boards - 2 pieces of round ones and a hexagonal one for the top. She bought two sets of cake 'pillars' and hot glued them to the boards. You probably need to wrap the boards with your desired theme material first.
You need to attach the 'pillars' by hot glue directly onto the boards so you have to cut away a small section of the 'wraped' board.
Then accessorize accordingly. For CNY she bought the Chinese red thread lace and hot glued it to the side of the cake boards and placed Gold bullions in between the cup cakes.
Hope the above explanation helps!
allthingspurple: When you grow up in a house with a fanatical crafter mother, I think you have little choice but to HAVE to have some creativity! Hahaha!
kashmirkat: *giggles* I'll ask #1!
Thank you!
lunch buckets: Thank you. BTW are you going to send in any entry for the competition, just for fun? It ends tomorrow!
Is the stand for this cake also self made and the same one as the one for the CNY? maybe too much to ask, but I'll ask. :) Are you able to take a pic of hot glued parts? many thanks in advanced
wow.. what a lovely cake...great presentation....here's wishing your #2 a belated Happy Sweet 16 Birthday
Oh my gosh. I've never seen such homemade ... AWESOMENESS! That is one kick butt cake by #1.
Wow, that's beautiful. Good job #1, you are as good as any baker. And Happy belated sweet 16 to #2.
elizabeth wong: This stand is from Wiltons. Under RM200/=.
I borrowed it from a friend. I'll try to provide some details or pics if possible. Can you provide your e-mail address pls.
yozo: Thanks for the birthday wishes and kind comments!
tarcoulis: Lots of love for the sister is probably the reason for so much effort.

3lilangels: Thanks so much!
diyana: *ponders and wonders* Probably a "Piano" by then....
my email id is lizwong72@gmail.com. Only when convenient to you..Thanks much
elizabeth wong: Ok thank you. Will respond when possible.
Wow! The cake is awesome! Your #1 should really consider being a pastry chef! :)
And Happy Belated Sweet 16 to #2!
wokkingmum: Thank you for the Birthday greetings!
#1's 19 years old and in college currently. I've left her to decide what she wants to do and I think she feels that being a pastry chef is too much effort and too little time.
For the time being, she's still having fun!
